The Texas Essential Skills and Knowledge (TEKS) curriculum is used throughout La Feria Independent School District schools. The curriculum allows the district to help students to expect more of themselves, achieve well, and excel in life. The TEKS provides a series of frameworks in Math, Science, Social Studies, English Language Arts and Reading, Languages Other Than English, Fine Arts, and Career Development. The Texas Education Agency also allows the use of Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate curriculum and have developed other models for advanced study such as Early College High Schools and dual credit programs.
We currently cover the following La Feria-area school district: La Feria Independent School District.
Educating Our Parents: Understanding the La Feria District Curriculum
The Math curriculum introduces students to a variety of problem-solving techniques. In the early grades, students use visualization and manipulation to learn how to place objects in sets and then how to add, subtract, multiply and divide. As they advance through school they learn how to use these skills to complete algebraic formulas and begin the study of statistics. To round out their education in problem-solving, students then are able to complete classes in geometry, trigonometry, and calculus.
La Feria Independent School District includes the Social Studies curriculum into each student's life from their first year at school. Part of this curriculum includes the study of Geography. Students learn about the physical and human geographic factors that played a part in the expansion of our nation. They also learn about how different geographic regions face different factors such as hurricanes, earthquakes, and tornadoes. Students also are taught about how population growth and modernization impact the physical environment.

Chalk Talk: Parent-Teacher Conference
When preparing to attend a parent-teacher conference, it helps if the parents know what to expect. The most important point to come away with is how the child is doing in the class and to find if there are specific areas that need attention. When scheduling the conference make sure that it is not squeezed in so that there is plenty of time to address issues. Also, unless the teacher requests it, the child and any siblings should not be brought to the meeting. Before going the parent needs to be aware of the child’s grades and be familiar with the curriculum. Begin with any positives that the child has about the class or the teacher. This opens the doorway to a friendly conversation that puts everyone at ease. Then make sure that any questions are asked and answered. After, stay involved with the class by reading newsletters and sending occasional notes to the teacher with encouragement or with questions.
