Calumet Park District and Curriculum
The local school district maintains an expectation of excellence from its students. They use the Illinois Learning Standards, which incorporate the Common Core Standards for Math and Language Arts, within its framework. Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Calumet Park District Curriculum
The Illinois Learning Standards provides detailed standards for the types of critical reading, analytic writing, mathematical problem-solving, and scientific inquiry that students should do each year. One recent update to the curriculum entails the reading curriculum which now places greater emphasis on reading non-fiction, informational texts than previously. The goal is to help students develop the different comprehension, analytic and interpretive skills they need to understand different texts.
The school districts strive to provide opportunities to all students and to meet students’ needs and encourage students to reach their full potential. The hope is that students will become self-directed learners and recognize where their personal and academic strengths lie. Students are also encouraged to get involved in their school and in their local community. The school also encourages behaviors that assist in the development of their character so that students learn not only how to learn but how to behave in order to achieve success in life.

- State Report Card - The State of Illinois issues report cards for all districts and the schools within each district. To help parents understand how the schools are doing in their mission of educating all students to proficiency in core subjects and preparing them for post-secondary life, the district provides access to all the schools report cards.

- Activities & Clubs at Summit Learning Center - Summit Learning Center has comprehensive extracurricular programs to connect students with personal, academic and professional interests. Students are encouraged to participate in these groups. Some of the options include Intramural Athletics, Video/Drama Club, Leading Ladies, and a Service Learning Club.

Chalk Talk: Early Action
Many students want to reap the benefits of early applications without the drawbacks of a binding application. Early Action (EA) is a good middle ground for these students. EA are early, usually due in November, which means that applicants compete with fewer other students. Colleges favor EA applications and lump them in, somewhat, with Early Decision applicants, which leads to much higher acceptance rates. But EA applicants aren’t quite favored as much as Early Decision, so the acceptance rates aren’t as substantial. Still, students don’t face the same restrictions when they apply EA, either, and are free to attend whichever college they choose. So, EA is a good choice for many students.
