Dayton District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

The Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) is the curriculum used by Dayton Independent School District and provides a comprehensive set of learning objectives in core and elective subjects. The design of the TEKS curriculum is to establish a foundation during the elementary and middle school years that gives students all the skills and knowledge they will need to take on more complex academics in high school. The learning objectives also contain expectations for the development of critical thinking. Along the way, assessments are given to ensure students are meeting all the objectives and supports or enhancements are provided to students according to their needs.

We currently cover the following Dayton-area school district: Dayton Independent School District.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Dayton District Curriculum

The English language arts and reading curriculum now emphasizes informational texts in addition to its focus on literary works. Students learn about the different purposes for fiction and non-fiction and develop different comprehension and analysis skills when reading each. They learn about craft and structure so they can understand how authors develop their ideas. This, in turn, helps them understand how to support and develop their own ideas in writing and how to structure their essays or stories.

The mathematics curriculum at Dayton ISD introduces students to problem-solving techniques in all areas of math before taking a more focused approach on key topics. Algebra and geometry are emphasized and taught so that students can see both their practical applications and how they are used in more advanced areas of math and science. Students learn about patterns and proportional relationships which help them work with equations. Their lessons in measurement and spatial analysis help them when they are working with geometric proofs and theorems.

Chalk Talk: Parent Teacher Conferences

During parent teacher conferences, there are many questions that parents may have for the teacher or issues they would like to address. It’s a good idea to write down a list of questions before the meeting so that nothing is missed during this brief meeting. Parents should ask about both strengths and weaknesses and if there are any suggestions for ways they can help at home. Finally, parents need to find out how they can help. Teachers may have times for parents to help in the classroom or they may have suggestions on how they can help from home. Finding out this information will help the child to have a better experience at school and may even help ease the mind of the teacher and the parents.
