Summerside District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

The curriculum used in Summerside’s schools was developed by the PEI Department of Education, Early Learning and Culture so that all subjects would be taught according to high-quality standards. The frameworks cover all core subjects and programs in Industrial Technology, Communication Technology, Culinary Arts, Accounting, Cooperative Education, and Independent Study. Each subject area framework explains the skills and knowledge that students will develop and what they will be able to do with them. The secondary level learning standards are designed to prepare students for college and professional life.

We currently cover the following Summerside-area school districts: English Language School Board and Commission Scolaire de Langue Française.

Chalk Talk: Helping Children Develop Critical Reading Skills

Beyond reading to children, there are many things that parents can do to support the development of critical reading skills throughout their school years. Starting early, of course, reading to children and getting them engaged in stories is essential for their development of an appreciation for reading. Elementary school age children will begin to develop some independence in reading, so letting them choose the books they want to read is recommended and after they have read a book they're interested in, get them to discuss what it was about and what they thought of the book. Another idea for early readers is to subscribe to a magazine, such as Ranger Rick, that is targeted to their age level and offers interesting tidbits about nature, great photographs, and activities. By giving them a basis in reading and discussing both fiction and non-fiction, children will adept easily to academic expectations for reading.
