Cornwall District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

The curriculum used in Cornwall’s schools was developed by the PEI Department of Education, Early Learning and Culture and sets out frameworks for the learning expectations in each subject. The frameworks contain General, Key-Stage, and Specific Curriculum Outcomes that describe the broad and specific goals for learning. Students are also assessed on their learning to make sure they are achieving the goals set out in the core subjects. They are assessed in reading, writing and mathematics at the end of Grade 3, 6 and 9 and also take assessments that show how PEI students are doing in comparison to students across Canada and the world.

We currently cover the following Cornwall-area school districts: English Language School Board and Commission Scolaire de Langue Française.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Cornwall District Curriculum

The Science curriculum establishes a base of knowledge in content and scientific processes, and then begins to specialize units of inquiry so that students are able to do advanced study in them. In tenth grade, students learn about Sustainability of Ecosystems, Earth and Space Science, Chemical Reactions, and Motion. Students will study how matter cycles through biotic and abiotic components of an ecosystem by tracking carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen. Using such information, they also analyse the impact of external factors on an ecosystem.

The Physical Science unit of inquiry into Motion introduces students to the relationship among displacement, time, and velocity and how to represent these values graphically and mathematically. They also learn how to represent and analyse the relationship between velocity, time, and acceleration. In the Chemical Reactions unit of inquiry, students start by learning how to write formulas for some common molecular compounds and become able to show how factors such as heat, concentration, light, and surface area can affect chemical reactions.

Chalk Talk: Gap Year Programmes

Many students choose to take a Gap Year between high school and college and they are used to serve a variety of different purposes. Some students choose to use the time to work and earn money for college. This is a great choice because it also gives students an idea about what the professional world is like and how they will use their college experience to maximize it. Other students may want to do a year or travel or community service, or combine the two and do charitable work in a developing nation. This is a great option for community minded students who want to connect to the world around them and then use those connections to deepen their college experience.
