Vinton District and Curriculum
Vinton-Shellsburg Community School District serves students in the communities of Vinton, Shellsburg, and Garrison. Vinton-Shellsburg’s educational program is described as being grounded in the basics and has been designed to cater to the diverse needs of all learners. The district has placed emphasis on expanding the integration of technology and has done so through new programs in Project Lead the Way, Math, the Sciences, Vocational Education, and Applied Academics. Each curricular area undergoes a review and revision process, with committees for each subject ensuring that the curriculum aligns.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Vinton District Curriculum
The district’s learning goals spell out that all students are expected to do the following: communicate effectively, become independent lifelong learners, be literature in technology, use leadership skills to work well and collaboratively with others, and be effective problem solvers. These goals are supported by the Iowa Core Curriculum and its emphasis on Literacy, Math, Science, Social Studies, and 21st Century Skills. The curriculum contains objectives for each of these subjects from kindergarten through 12th grade so that student learning has depth.
The Science curriculum originates with students’ learning the basic concepts and principles for the disciplines of physical, life, and Earth and space science. Once students have grasped a firm understanding of these principles, they are expected to reflect upon the scientific knowledge they have acquired to recognize connections and relationships between science and technology. They will develop scientific reasoning and literacy skills that will enable them to advance to more complex work and also use their mathematical knowledge to inform their scientific reasoning.

Chalk Talk: The More Serious Side of Children’s Books
Although children’s books are often known for being bright, colorful, and funny, it is also necessary for some books to teach children about serious life issues in a kid-friendly manner. The Baby-Sitters Club: The Truth about Stacey—a book in Ann M. Martin’s famous series—leads children to understand the seriousness of diabetes, which is becoming an even bigger issue with the epidemic of childhood obesity. It also shows that people who have diabetes—despite having a disability—can be normal, as Stacey tries to be. Al Capone Does My Shirts—written by Gennifer Choldenko—gives a background on autism and how disabilities were unfortunately handled many, many years ago, hopefully leading to children having more respect for people with disabilities.
