Winfield District and Curriculum

Winfield Unified School District provides a safe environment for students to achieve rigorous academic goals. The curriculum is based on the Kansas College and Career Ready Standards which give teachers detailed, grade-level learning expectations for each subject. These expectations represent the skills and knowledge that students need to become proficient in. Students also have many opportunities for extracurricular involvement and are taught to make healthy and smart life decisions. The school strives to offer all students opportunities for success, regardless of different learning styles or cultural differences.

We currently cover the following Winfield-area school district: Winfield Unified School District 465.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Winfield District Curriculum

The Kansas College and Career Ready Standards gives students clear expectations of what they should master by the end of each year. Teachers are also given the freedom to tailor their lessons to fit the specific needs of each student, whether that be remedial work to bring the student up to grade level, or advanced work to keep students engaged and interested. Teachers also present students with many creative and critical thinking assignments. Outside of the classroom, students are also offered many sports and arts electives as well as various clubs to pursue.

While the district maintains a focus on core academic subjects like English, Math, Science and Social Studies, an emphasis is given to community and school service, so that students can learn the value of helping others. Students are expected to make healthy choices in their lives and social interactions. These choices are modeled by the faculty and other students. The hope is that all students will become invested in their own learning and will continue to be engaged and involved in their own lives, their learning, and their communities after graduation.

Chalk Talk: Letters of Recommendation

Most colleges require from one to three teacher recommendations to accompany an application. These recommendations should come from a teacher who’s taught the applicant junior or senior year in a core academic class. If the teacher has had meaningful interaction with the student outside the classroom, as a coach or advisor, this will lend credence to the recommendation, but the main requirement is that the teacher taught the student. Recommendations are very useful for colleges because they give insight into the student’s work ethic, classroom performance, and even study habits. Recommendations give colleges a view of how the student might behave in a college class, so in many ways, they are one of the clearest indicators of a student’s possible future success.
