Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Sanger District Curriculum

The elementary mathematics program focuses on numerical learning through exploration involving mathematics contribution to real life contexts. The program was implemented by the state to ensure standards of mathematical practice are taught at the earliest grade levels. In high school, problem solving methods that they will use in algebra and geometry such as working with measurement and value relationships, are taught in preparation for high school. The high school courses in math include Algebra I and II, Geometry, Discrete Mathematics, Statistics and many Advanced Placement level courses.

The Science curriculum aims to inspire students to construct knowledge through the process of scientific inquiry and foster engagement through understanding of current scientific advances. One initiative of the state is the creation of T-STEM schools which focus on teaching science, technology, engineering, and math in an integrated fashion and to a level where students are prepared for a rigorous college education in these subjects. These programs begin in grade 6 and many high schools offer focused academies in STEM learning.

Chalk Talk: The SAT and ACT

Most colleges require standardized testing scores when considering students for admission. There are two tests, the SAT and the ACT, and colleges will accept either. The tests are similar in general format, but with many differences in approach and execution. Both require students to sit for long periods of time, answering multiple choice questions. Both allow a calculator and divide questions by sections, such as reading and math. The SAT begins with an essay, and the ACT ends with one. The ACT actually has an option for no essay, which might seem pointless at first, since colleges require the essay, but many will consider the essay portion from a previous test, so taking the ACT without the essay simply saves a student some time.
