Shenandoah District and Curriculum
The Shenandoah Community School District incorporates the Iowa Common Core Curriculum for literacy and math. The district has developed its own set of academic standards for science, social studies, and technology for each grade level. The curriculum guides include the main, general standards developed by the school district, followed by the specific knowledge students are expected to gain under each standard. The elementary and middle school curricula for science and social studies are organized by specific topics—e.g.: earth and space, life science, and physical science and economics, history, and geography.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Shenandoah District Curriculum
The elementary and middle school standards within the Iowa Core focus on the skills and knowledge that are fundamental to each subject. In Math, students learn how to perform operations, recognize patterns and relationships, recognize shapes and learn how to measure, and learn about proportions and ratios. In Science, students learn general content and also begin to understand the steps that scientists take to observe and study natural phenomenon. The Literacy framework is used to introduce students to all types of texts and develop their reading comprehension in various genres.
The high school curriculum guides for these subjects are separated by each high school course. The literacy, math, science, social studies and 21st century skills standards are set up differently: They include a specific skill students are expected to acquire and an explanation for what mastery looks like for each standard. The elementary and high schools each have one set of standards for all the grade levels, while the middle school has a set of standards for each grade from 5 to 8. The high school curricular opportunities incorporate advanced learning curriculum standards as well.

Keeping Informed: Recent Shenandoah Educational News
- Shenandoah Gets a Little TLC - Shenandoah Community School District recently received the Teacher Leadership Compensation (TLC) Grant, which several members of the district worked very hard for months to obtain. The funding will allow the district to expand teacher leadership roles and implement the Teacher Advancement Program (TAP), which ultimately increases student achievement by expanding teachers’ ability to deliver high-quality instruction and increasing teacher collaboration.
- Shenandoah ELL Associate Earns State Award - Shenandoah Community School District’s English Language Learners associate Patty Roberts was a recipient of the Iowa State Education Association’s (ISEA) Support Professional Award. Ms. Roberts is described as a caring professional who is highly dedicated to her students, school, and the the ELL community. She has a wide range of roles within the district, including integrating services, interpreting, translating, mentoring, and coaching.
- Chem, Physics Teacher Named Shenandoah Teacher of the Year - Nicole Grindle, who teaches chemistry and physics at Shenandoah High, including the AP versions of both, was selected as the district’s Teacher of the Year by her colleagues. In her nomination letter, others described how Ms. Grindle uses positive enforcement very effectively to challenge students and get them to achieve much more than they thought they could; this includes encouraging more students to take the more challenging AP courses. She is also the sponsor of the sophomore class, the co-sponsor of the yearbook, a sponsor of the school’s Science Bowl team, and an active participant in the Shenandoah Education Association.

Chalk Talk: General Resume Tips
Many people write extremely detailed—and long—resumes, but they likely won't be considered if they are much longer than about a page-and-a-half. Therefore, it is important to be brief but detailed and focus on the most important highlights for the job(s) that one is applying for. Resumes should always include the individual’s name, mailing address, and contact information in the top corner. Resumes are not the place to use fancy fonts and different colors; they should use a simple, standard font. The font, font size, spacing, and format should all be consistent throughout the resume to give it a clean, easy-to-read look. All of the sections and sub-sections, such as the Objective, Education, Work Experience, etc. act as headings and should stand out in some way (i.e.: by putting them in boldface type). It is fine to use lists with bullet points under each section.
