Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Waverly District Curriculum

Waverly Community Schools, in their English curriculum, teach students how to create successful written and oral presentations. To begin the students learn which skills are important in sharing topics and finding evidence that supports their points. They also learn how to locate information, conduct research, and summarize materials into a form that would interest their audience. By using these skills the students will be able to create and present material, not only in high school, but throughout their lives.

The Social Studies curriculum at Waverly Community Schools introduces students to cultures from around the world. Looking at local history, students discover why and when settled in their community, state and country. With this as a baseline, students can then discover the importance trade and exploration plays on settlers choosing an area. They also use all of this information to explore why other cultures would settle where they did. This study helps students to see the items that tie people together, not matter where or when they live.

Chalk Talk: Habits of Highly Successful Students

Students are often confused as to how to make the decisions or act in ways that will show good choices. To see how to do this many children watch their parents to see how they act. So parents need to be aware of their actions to make sure they are setting a good example. Some habits to show care with include being proactive, to help to see what effects their actions may have. Another is to show them how to organize their actions so they will be more effective in completing projects on time and with all the information needed. Parents need to show that discussions do not always have to have a winner and a loser, there are ways to look at any situation from both sides so that everyone feels good afterwards. Finally, show the child that everyone does better when they have a little down time. This helps to energize the student and can help them to look at projects from a different angle, if they are stuck.
