Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Dauphin District Curriculum

The English Language Arts curriculum is designed to help students in acquiring language and literacy through reading, writing, speaking and listening, and in how they analyze new material. The writing component seeks to have students learn to write for a number of different purposes such as analytic, informative, and creative. They also learn how to use a process when writing that includes brainstorming, drafting, editing and revising, and preparing a final presentation. Speaking and presentation skills are also a part of the curriculum's goals.

The reading component of the English Language Arts framework has been designed to assist in the literacy development of students in all subject areas. Starting in elementary school, students are introduced to both fiction and non-fiction and begin to recognize the difference between fact and opinion. This helps them learn how to evaluate texts that they read and promotes their critical thinking habits. Students also learn about the craft of literature, and the types of literary techniques that author's use which helps them analyze and interpret their reading.

Chalk Talk: Sustainable Development Education

One new and popular area of learning for students is in the field of Sustainable Development. This field combines real estate and business development with a focus on sustainability and best environmental practices. Some of the major topics focused on within the curriculum include poverty alleviation, human rights, health and environmental protection, and climate change and allows students to think creatively about challenges faced by the world. Sustainable development concepts are taught as early as elementary school as students see the environmental practices put into action such as recycling. In middle and high school, students are more aware of energy systems and savings their school might realize by switching energy sources. The province has many resources available to help students learn more about this topic on their Education for Sustainable Development website.
