Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Morden District Curriculum

The Math curriculum is organized around four major topics, or strands, that comprise the majority of problem-solving methods that students will use. The four strands are Patterns and Relations, Statistics and Probability, Shape and Space, and Number. Students learn about number systems starting in elementary school when they master basic numbers and then learn about fractions and negative numbers. These lessons prepare them for middle and high school where they are introduced to complex number systems.

The Patterns and Relations is also introduced early and helps prepare students for the algebraic thinking called upon in high school math. In high school, the topics they will focus on are Variables and Equations and Relations and Functions. In the Shape and Space strand, students master geometry and learn how to work with geometric proofs and theorems. They also learn about the properties of 3-D Objects and 2-D Shapes. Statistics and Probability introduces students to Data Analysis and Chance and Uncertainty theories.

Chalk Talk: Parental Involvement

The conventional wisdom is that students do better in school knowing that their parents are engaged and involved in their learning experience. Parental involvement, however, is a very broad term and can encompass many different things that parents can do. The first starts at home where parents and children talk about school, what the child is learning, social issues, and other topics that interest the child. In terms of supporting the schools, parents can volunteer in classrooms and help small groups of students with their reading or math. They can also work with science teachers to guide students on a project. Sponsoring or assisting with extracurricular activities is another option, and more feasible for parents who work during the day. Finally, many schools have advisory councils that offer parents the chance to provide their district with important input and ideas.
