West Long Branch District and Curriculum
West Long Branch has a long history, as the area has been recognized since the 18th century, when it was previously called Mechanicsville. West Long Branch Public School District is a district consisting of students from grades PK-8. Once students reach ninth grade, they move on to Shore Regional High School, which is located in West Long Branch and also serves students who reside in three additional communities. Both districts follow the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards which provide detailed learning objectives for each grade level in all academic subjects.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the West Long Branch District Curriculum
Shore Regional has developed and posted very detailed curriculum guides for each grade level, and content area. For each curricular unit in English language arts and math, there is a unit overview that contains a unit description, a list of 21st century skills that are touched on, a rationale for the unit, etc. Next are the learning targets and standards, followed by the unit’s overarching essential questions and enduring understandings. After that, there is a list of unit learning targets separated by what students will “know” and “do.”
Additionally, there is a list of assessments that will show evidence of student learning as well as the equipment and teacher resources that are necessary. - Shore Regional High Students Visited By Veterans - For the most recent Veterans Day, students at Shore Regional High were visited by 24 veterans of the U.S. military. Short Regional High’s interim assistant principal—a Vietnam War veteran himself—organized the event and talked about how the students actually seeing the veterans and hearing about the acts of heroism from the men themselves had a “more profound effect” for the students than simply learning about the events in their history classes.
- SRHS Holds Iron Chef Competition - Shore Regional High held a cooking competition modeled after the popular TV series Iron Chef in which teams of students had to prepare one dish with the secret ingredient of limes, followed by two dishes with the secret ingredient of almonds. This was a process—not just a one-off competition—as students researched recipes involving the secret ingredients, used math skills to figure out and put together a list of how much of each ingredient they would need, had lessons on plating and planning, and held a prep day ahead of the competition.

Chalk Talk: The Special Role of the Substitute Teacher
Substitute teachers are often under-appreciated, but they play an important role in the school, as they step in for teachers when they are ill or otherwise cannot make it to their jobs. It can be very difficult to be a substitute, as they often do not know until early in the morning if they will be needed and what grade level and/or content area they will be subbing for. They walk into unfamiliar classrooms with unfamiliar students, and although teachers are supposed to have lesson plans pre-prepared, they often do not, so the subs have to improvise for the day. Furthermore, even if detailed lessons are left for the sub, he/she does not have much time to prepare and go over the lesson beforehand.
