Leland District and Curriculum
Brunswick County Schools is home to almost 12,000 students in 19 total schools: 10 elementary schools, four middle schools, four high schools, and one alternative school. The district utilizes the LiveBinder resource to create pacing guides that lay out which topics are taught in each content area and grade level at which point in the year. This resource is used to help parents understand the learning expectations their children will face at their grade level, and it is also helpful in creating integrated learning opportunities that bring more than one topic together so that students see how their learning connects and relates to the real world.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Leland District Curriculum
The curriculum has recently been re-designed so that it is more rigorous and effectively prepares students for their college and career goals. Some of the greatest changes have occurred to the English language arts curriculum which now emphasizes critical reading and writing in such a way that students can use these literacy skills in all classes. Non-fiction reading that helps students learn how to comprehend and analyze history or science texts are now a part of the reading curriculum.
All of the elementary schools in Brunswick County Schools have a curriculum specialist who provide leadership and support to teachers in terms of implementing the curriculum and standards in their classrooms, incorporating effective instructional strategies in their teaching, integrating instructional technology, applying diagnostic testing to assess academic areas of weakness in students, and analyzing student data. At the secondary level, there are specialists and/or coaches for each content area to work with teachers at all the middle and high schools.

Keeping Informed: Recent Leland Educational News
- WBHS Presents Student-Directed Theater Show - West Brunswick High’s Drama Club recently put on the production “The Outsiders” based on the novel by S.E. Hinton, which was directed by two of the school’s seniors. One of those students is directing the production as part of her senior project, which looks into how theater is a reflection of society and culture. The students chose “The Outsiders” because it is a classic, yet the students can still relate to many of its themes, such as conflicts between “cliques” of people.
- SBHS Opens Prom Closet - South Brunswick High is once again collecting gently used prom dresses, shoes, handbags, and jewelry for its Prom Closet. The Prom Closet is open to all girls in Brunswick County planning to attend any school dance from the eighth grade formal to the junior or senior prom. This initiative helps make the prom (or any other school dance) special to all students!
- Brunswick County Students Give Solid Suggestions for Dress Code - Brunswick County high school juniors and seniors were asked to give suggestions on school dress codes to the school board, and they agreed with school officials that clothing should not be inappropriate or distract from instructional time. Students offered up suggestions such as dress code violators having to attend an after-school student-led Dress for Success class as punishment, forming a student-led Dress Code Council to determine consequences for violators, and teaching the younger middle school students how to dress appropriately in instructional and work environments.

Chalk Talk: Storytelling: Organizing the Story
The process of creating a story—the act of telling a story or presenting information about a topic using a variety of multimedia, including images, voice narrations, and music—involves several steps and begins on paper. Once students choose or are assigned a topic, they must either research the content or brainstorm the story they will tell. After that, they will write (or type) out their narration script, which will be the actual words used in their story. A storyboard is a great graphic organizer for students to write their narratives out on. They will organize their narrative (text and/or voice), images, music, and any other audio clips by slide, or scene. After students write their script, they will select each of these elements and write a description (or draw a picture) of them on their storyboard near the text they match up with.
