Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Laurinburg District Curriculum
The North Carolina Standard Course of Study has also developed a Global Education curriculum to ensure students are prepared for the world they will graduate into. One focus of the Global Education curriculum is language learning, and students are able to take courses in 15 different languages, 7 of which have a language immersion component available. The language immersion programs help students become bilingual and bilterate in a second language, and instruction is conducted in both languages.
The North Carolina Standard Course of Study incorporates the Common Core goals for English language arts. The Common Core State Standards organizes the ELA curriculum around reading, writing, speaking and listening, and language. The reading strand focuses equal attention on fiction and non-fiction so that students are able to read and analyze literary works and also able to read scientific and history texts and learn new information. Students also learn how to locate and evaluate texts that they may use for independent reading or research.

Chalk Talk: College Applications
One of the biggest issues with college applications is the way they restrict students or add obligations for students to be considered. This can be a real problem for some students. There are two types of applications that allow students to determine where they will go during the first semester of their senior year - Early Action and Early Decision applications. Regular EA applications are due November 15th, usually. They don’t differ from other types of applications other than being early. Being compelled to attend a college without choice, if accepted, for example, can have an adverse effect on a student who is struggling financially. Also, not allowing students to apply to other colleges can be a difficulty. One of the worst issues is the long wait students often have to receive a response from a college.
