Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Pinehurst District Curriculum
The North Carolina Standard Course of Study provides progressive frameworks for each subject area that introduce students to the basics during elementary schools and build on those lessons during middle and high school. The math and language arts frameworks incorporate the goals of the Common Core State Standards which provide a focused, college-preparatory series of learning expectations. The expectations include the key skills, knowledge, and concepts that students should learn each year.
The district has developed detailed websites for each area of Curriculum and Instruction. For example, the English/Language Arts section contains resources on the Common Core and NC Essential Standards, the instructional support model used in the content area, note taking and study skills, and parent guides. Other resources include STEM infusion which explores the integration of science, technology, engineering and math, professional development, organizational charts, media services, digital learning, and intervention programs.

Chalk Talk: Choosing a Major
After choosing a college, one of the most important decisions students will make is choosing a major. Faculty advisors and guidance counselors can help identify colleges that offer programs that fit your skills well. If there’s time before heading off to college, volunteer at a few places that you think you might like to work. Spending time learning about jobs can help you decide what certificate or degree you want to pursue. Take a few classes outside your intended major just to see if something else appeals to you. It doesn’t hurt to weigh your options, but don’t wait too long: the longer you wait to decide on a major the more time you will spend in college, thus increasing your expenses.
