Fenton District and Curriculum
The Fenton Area Public Schools provides a curriculum that meets the educational standards set by the Michigan Department of Education. The standards focus on early literacy development and increasing the choices for students at the high school level. In addition to the Michigan Merit Curriculum, the district high school is also an International Baccalaureate school which allows them to use the curriculum designed for that prestigious program. The IB curriculum focuses on the core academics and also includes a Theory of Knowledge course and opportunity to complete a meaningful project that emphasizes creativity, activity, and service (CAS).

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Fenton District Curriculum
The math curriculum at Fenton Area Public Schools introduces students to a variety of problem-solving techniques. In the early grades, students use visualization and manipulation to learn how to place objects in sets and then how to add, subtract, multiply and divide. As they advance through school they learn how to use these skills to complete algebraic formulas and begin the study of statistics. To round out their education in problem-solving, students then are able to complete classes in geometry, trigonometry, and calculus.
Fenton Area Public Schools includes the Social Studies curriculum into each student’s life from their first year at school. Part of this curriculum includes the study of Geography. After this they discover information about other states in the United States, plus countries that border the U.S. Soon, they find out about other countries, including their topography and the influence that it had in settlements and trade. By becoming familiar with all this students become aware of the world around them and the variety of cultures surrounding them.

Keeping Informed: Recent Fenton Educational News
- Mu Alpha Theta - Mu Alpha Theta is an honorary mathematical organization. This group inspires interest in math, develops mathematical scholarship and spreads the enjoyment of math. Through national conventions, students can interact with other students from across the country. There are also competitions that the students can participate in through Log 1 contests, Rocket City Math League and Mathematics Minutes Video Contest.
- FFA Organization - FFA, formerly known as Future Farmers of America, welcomes students that are enrolled in Agriculture courses. Through this organization students are given support in their choice for a future career whether in biology, farming, horticulture or other areas. Students acquire skills in leadership and teamwork as they compete in competitions in their area of agriculture.
- Interact Club - Interact is a school-community partnership with The Rotary Club International. This group works together to make positive difference in their communities. Some of the projects may be hands-on, have international connections, help students develop leadership skills and learn how to work with each other while enjoying their time together.

Chalk Talk: Parent-Teacher Conferences
When preparing to attend a parent-teacher conference, it helps if the parents know what to expect. The most important point to come away with is how the child is doing in the class and to find if there are specific areas that need attention. When scheduling the conference make sure that it is not squeezed in so that there is plenty of time to address issues. Also, unless the teacher requests it, the child and any siblings should not be brought to the meeting. Before going the parent needs to be aware of the child’s grades and be familiar with the curriculum. Begin with any positives that the child has about the class or the teacher. This opens the doorway to a friendly conversation that puts everyone at ease. Then make sure that any questions are asked and answered.
