EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY
I believe that they key to learning is passion. I think a teacher’s primary job is to unlock their students’ interest in lifelong learning. Once a student is engaged, the process of learning can become fun, and they are more open to instruction about how to learn, how to study, how to organize their notes, and the basic skills that separate successful students from less successful ones.
I think confidence and stress levels are often overlooked as barriers to learning, and can also be keys to unlocking a passion for learning.
EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND
I received my Bachelor’s Degree in English with a minor in Creative Writing at York University and then received my Master’s Degree in Creative Writing at the University of Guelph.
TEACHING EXPERIENCE
I worked in the Writing Centre at Humber College tutoring University and College students in grammar and essay writing skills. I worked at Parkdale Public School in Toronto, ON, as a workshop facilitator, teaching creative writing modules to a grade eight classroom. I have also worked for years as a volunteer literacy tutor with adult learners.
EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
I enjoy reading and writing, cooking, knitting, and gardening. Creative Writing has been my lifelong passion, and I try to utilize this interest to help students engage with literacy from a different angle. Writing a poem, or a speculative sci-fi story about the future, can capture a student’s interest in literacy and language arts in a whole new way. While in school, I hosted a book club and also coordinated a monthly reading series.
