EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY

I believe that all students can achieve academic success if they’re given the appropriate tools and help. With individualized care, students can not only be successful in learning, but can start to enjoy it as well. Each student is different, which means that what works for one student may not be the best course of action for another. By finding a student’s unique strengths, the student and teacher can work towards a brighter academic future.

EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND

I achieved a 3.7 GPA at the University of Toronto in my final two years of study. I was extremely involved academically, participating in the Association of Philosophy Students and having a paper published in the undergraduate philosophy journal. I graduated in 2011.

I am currently studying for a Masters of Social Work at Wilfrid Laurier University, focusing on individuals, families, and groups. I expect to graduate in the spring of 2016.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

After finishing my undergraduate degree, I moved to Japan where I was hired by a prefectural board of education as an Assistant Language Teacher (ALT) for three years (2011-2014). I worked in a Japanese public high school and followed the Japanese curriculum to make engaging and fun lesson plans. I taught 16 unique classes a week, in addition to creating assignments and speaking/listening tests. Additionally, I volunteered in two English conversation classes: one for children aged 4-12, and the other for adults.

Prior to moving to Japan, I volunteered as an aid in a grade 2 class at an elementary school in Scarborough, Ontario.

EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

Currently, because I am a new resident of the Kitchener area, my extracurricular activities are limited to yoga. After I get more comfortable in the area, I hope to resume hiking. I would like to continue mountain climbing, a hobby that started in Japan, but unfortunately there aren’t many mountains to climb in Ontario!
