EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY
I think that regularly scheduled tutoring sessions, at a minimum, are a good discipline for students – one or more hours every week in which to focus on a specific subject, express any challenges he/she might be having, ask questions of a knowledgeable person who has set aside this time to offer one on one answers and explanations. I think the best sessions are mostly structured, but not rigidly so, allowing some time for chat, and with a good dose of humor and fun.
EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND
Studied at Anderson College and Furman University; Bachelor’s from Erskine College in English.
TEACHING EXPERIENCE
I have been involved in education in a variety of ways for many years. Most recently I was a “teaching artist” in my local school district of Greenville, SC, a program which consisted of integrating an art form (music, in my case) into the curriculum standards of the class, working with the teacher on lesson plans. Beyond teaching and music, I have worked as a mental health counselor, a halfway house director, a bookstore manager, a landscaper, a freelance writer, and numerous other sidelines.
EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
Quite a few of my “hobbies” have also become avocations. I have been a professional musician for almost twenty years, and have been a freelance writer all of my adult life. In 2012, my wife and I released our illustrated ebook – The Tales of Astro Cat – available on Kindle, Nook, and Smashwords.
