EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY
Children need and deserve the best education we can provide for them so they can become productive, healthy, and happy members of society. It’s also important to remember that, while all children need an education, they don’t all learn the same way or have the same skills. Children are individuals like the rest of us, and should be recognized as such. This means tailoring the learning experience to their needs as much as possible.
EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND
I graduated with an M.A in Special Education from the University of Missouri. I received scholarships for my education, and worked as a Teaching Assistant. Before this, I earned my B.S. in Health from Oregon State. I had certifications in reading and health, and am currently certified in Special Education.
TEACHING EXPERIENCE
Most recently, I was a Long-Term Special Education Substitute Teacher in an elementary school while I was a Student Teacher. Prior to this, I was a Consultant and Clinician for a private company for eight years. The company specialized in teaching children and adults who had difficulties with reading, comprehension, and math. We used specially designed programs to target each individual’s needs. I planned, implemented, and monitored lessons.
EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
I am a member of the Council for Exceptional Children. I attended meetings at a local college chapter, where we planned activities to increase club membership. Currently, I am the Vice President of Public Relations for a local chapter of Toastmasters. It’s my job to inform members and the public of our mission, meetings, and events. Lastly, I attend book club meetings monthly.
