EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY
I emphasize critical thinking, critical reading, critical writing, and the intersections of these often referenced, but less often articulated, “transferable skills.” I emphasize the intersections of critical thinking and critical (and close) reading through class discussions, stressing student discussion, especially student-to-student discussion. Students tend to become more self-reliant and open when they are allowed the space to formulate positions and critical questions without the fear of correction often associated with larger classes that are more lecture or instructor-centered.
EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND
I hold a BA in English and Philosophy from the University of Maine, and an MA in English from the University of Maine.I am currently a doctoral candidate working on my dissertation from Purdue.
TEACHING EXPERIENCE
As one student has written on a course evaluation, “Out of all my instructors this semester, he is the only one who shows he cares about his students’ progress.” As further evidence of my teaching abilities, when asked on evaluations if a student would recommend me as an instructor, a high percentage answer strongly that they would.
EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
In addition to teaching and working on my dissertation, I spend a good deal of time reading. I am also an avid runner and compete in all standard road distances.
