EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY

My educational philosophy consists of an ability to continually strive for growth; growth in my own teaching, as well as measurable and non-measurable growth among my students. I believe in the importance of teaching to all students and feel one-on-one teaching time should be given to the students that are struggling as well as the individuals exceeding expectations.

All students need to be challenged, but also encouraged. Every student has strengths and weaknesses, and it is my goal to highlight and nurture their strengths while also working on their weaknesses; making a well rounded individual both in the classroom and in life.

EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND

I have completed my Bachelor of Education, belonging to the Ontario College of Teachers for the past three years. I hold a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree in Psychology and Law. I also specialize as a Rehabilitation Therapist (Cognitive and Physical) working with individuals who have suffered brain injuries.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I have teaching experience in large classrooms (up to 35 students), small classrooms (3-5 students), and on a one-on-one tutoring basis (in grade 9/10 math, grade 11 law, primary level reading/mathematics).
My classroom experience in the primary/junior level has enabled me to adapt to the needs of the class as a whole, while still managing to challenge and interact with all students in the classroom, regardless of learning exceptionalities/ delays. At this level there is much variation in reading levels among students and reading is so important for all aspects of schooling at the primary levels that it has always been a focus of mine.

My expertise/continuing education working with individuals who have suffered brain injuries has helped me understand the importance of establishing routines and structure around learning. This is so very important for individuals with memory impairment, but is also an area that I have worked on with “normal” functioning individuals.

EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

I’m also a Junior hockey coach in my area. I have helped run hockey schools and love teaching in the area of sport as academia. I use much of what I have learned from coaching in the classroom and vice versa.
