EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY
I believe the purpose of education is to empower students to reach their full potential as individuals, as well as members of society.
Education should enable students to act intelligently as well as purposefully. As an educator, I believe it is my responsibility to provide a safe learning environment for students where they know that their ideas are accepted and that their learning is valued.
I believe students learn best when they are immersed in multiple learning styles giving them various ways in which to educationally thrive and explore.
EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND
I grew up in a rural area and attended my local school district until graduation. I then went to Drake University and received my degree in Elementary Education with a music minor and a reading certification. As a pre-service teacher, I worked with low income students in the inner city school districts teaching reading, science, and social studies. Upon graduating college, I was a substitute teacher in many different grade levels which allowed me to work with a wide variety of students and abilities.
TEACHING EXPERIENCE
As a first grade teacher, I planned and taught all subjects as well as intensive level reading groups. I have also been a reading and math tutor for students ranging in age from Kindergarten-6th grade. I taught at the Science Center of Iowa during one of my summers in school which consisted of science and math concepts.
EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
For fun, I enjoy playing my violin which I have played since the age of five. I currently am the director of a bell choir at my church and will soon be teaching 7, 8 and 9th grade Catechism classes. I also enjoy working at my local library.
