EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY
To me, tutoring or teaching isn’t about fixing something that is wrong. It is about exploring understandings and developing skills. Learning is a practice and a process. I strive not to help a student write the perfect essay, but to guide them towards an understanding of what they are saying, why they are saying it, and how to put it so that others will understand.
Because I see the learning process as valuable in and of itself, I find it very important that it be guided by patience. Then the student can discover and develop their own skills at their own pace.
EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND
After graduating from Campolindo High School in California I completed 4 years at University of California, Santa Cruz to obtain a B.A. in Anthropology. I also completed a 200 hour yoga teacher training program in Santa Cruz.
TEACHING EXPERIENCE
I recently tutored a student who was repeating a writing course over the summer. He would show me a draft of an essay and I would ask him to explain the assignment to me and what he had written so far. We would go over it one paragraph at a time. I asked questions like, “How is this sentence supporting your thesis?” or “What do you think about the use of this word?” And by looking more closely he would gain insights as to what he had written and whether it was satisfactory or could use some modification.
EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
I practice yoga regularly to keep my body and mind healthy and happy and to take breaks from the stresses of life. I also slackline, which is similar to tightrope walking, and am one of the world’s leading females for this activity. I volunteer for an organization dedicated to the quality of life for people with disabilities. I have helped people with moderate or significant mental disabilities to walk all the way across a slackline.
STANDARDIZED TEST RESULTS
I received an overall score of 2060 on the SAT.
