The area districts follow the Ontario Curriculum as the framework for the instructional process from kindergarten through grade 12 in all core and elective subjects. The elementary curriculum flows into the secondary curriculum along major strands in each subject so that students have a cohesive experience. During grades 7-12, all districts also implement Student Success Strategies that include providing high quality program options and one-on-one support during these transitional years. At the secondary level, the Ministry of Education has developed Innovative programs to increase graduation rates by providing specialized courses suited to differing student interests.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh District Curriculum
The curriculum in English begins with fundamentals in phonetical awareness, language development, reading, and personal expression. During vocabulary acquisition exercises, synonyms and antonyms are explore. Students also learn about connotations and evaluate denotations that are similar to some words and use these strategies to decode other words as they are reading. Literature is used as a window to other worlds as well as a source of analysis, evaluation, and interpretation. Non-fiction is also used in the curriculum so that students develop broad literacy abilities.
The Science framework starts out with basics about physical science, life science, and earth science and offers students plenty of opportunities to learn about the scientific process. Forces, momentum, and motion are also an integral component of the curriculum. Learners study Newton’s laws and explore gravitational, elastic, and friction forces. Air resistance and drag are studied in depth as well. In high school, the foundation in these subjects allow students to explore advanced topics like biodiversity, chemical bonds and reactions, forces of physics, and higher-level environmental science.

Chalk Talk: Parental Involvement in School
There are ways to be involved with a child’s schoolwork other than actually completing it for them. When a child comes home from school, rather than asking how their day was, parents can ask open-ended questions like what did the child enjoy the most. Open-communication with the teacher also helps a child by showing concern. Ask about their friends so that they feel comfortable talking about their social lives as well. Ask how they felt about things that happened at school, as well, so that they have an opportunity to reflect. Set up a place for a child specifically for their homework and finally become involved in the school and the activities that the child enjoys. This involvement shows children that education is important and helps them have better behavior, attitude and attendance.
