Brockville District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

The Ontario Curriculum is the framework for learning for students in Brockville. It is a framework for each core academic subject that describes the skills students need to gain to thoroughly learn the material. It also fosters the development of critical thinking skills and the ability to make connections between life and learning. The basic knowledge that is learned in each subject also helps students master deeper concepts like problem-solving, critical thinking, making connections and representing knowledge. The Ontario Curriculum allows teachers flexibility in their lesson plans while providing standards of learning for all students.

We currently cover the following Brockville-area school districts: Upper Canada District School Board and Catholic District School Board of Eastern Canada.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Brockville District Curriculum

The academic subjects that students take are overseen by the Ontario Curriculum which has been designed as a means to guide the whole instructional process. The curriculum explains what the major goals of subject learning are, what skills and knowledge should be taught at each grade level, and what students are expected to be able to do and show on performance assessments. The district also offers universal pre-kindergarten, academic intervention services (AIS), special education courses, and guidance and counseling.

The secondary curriculum begins with team-based instruction for middle school students to help with social and emotional development. In addition to core academic coursework, students also have the opportunity to take classes in Aboriginal education, art, technology, physical education, health, orchestra, business and computers, foreign languages, music. Students are expected to become independent in high school and required to participate in community service projects so that they develop the skills of community engagement and collaboration.

Chalk Talk: Making Friends

As children enter a new school or new situation they do not want to feel like they do not fit in, so helping them understand how to make friends is one of the parents’ job. First step is to make sure that the teen understands that they are loved and the parent is proud of them. This helps to build self-esteem and confidence, which helps them make good choices. Next, parents need to listen to concerns and worries, then discuss the qualities that matter the most in friendships such as kindness and trustworthiness. Get to know the others that the teen is becoming friends with, not to judge on exterior qualities, but to make sure they are not being pulled into alcohol or drugs. Finally, help the teen become involved in activities that they enjoy, this way they will be with others that feel the same right off.
