Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Detroit District Curriculum

Two goals of Detroit’s English and Language Arts curriculum are to improve overall and literacy and increase the number of students taking Advanced Placement tests in English. Kindergarten through sixth grade uses the Open Court reading series which focuses on the alphabetic principle and explicitly teaches phonics to beginning readers. Older students use research-based reading programs that build comprehension and vocabulary skills by providing a rich literature experience.

With a strong focus on problem solving and the quantitative nature of our modern world, mathematics instruction seeks to prepare students for the real world. Based on Common Core Standards, students get exposed early on to algebraic thinking while high school students have the opportunity to take advanced calculus and statistics classes. Additionally, extracurriculars like the Academic Games and the Chess League let students put the knowledge they have gained to the test.

Chalk Talk: Technology in the Classroom

Touch-screen technology is making its way into today's classrooms more than ever and one of the best examples is the interactive whiteboard. These devices are mounted onto walls like regular whiteboards and they have an impressive list of capabilities. They can display computer desktop screens- making web surfing and Internet research a whole class activity. They can also be manipulated with electronic pens and, for the teacher, the opportunities for lessons, games, and activities are limitless. In Detroit Public Schools, many schools have SmartBoards, one of the most recognized brands of interactive whiteboard used in today's classrooms.
