Windsor District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

In Windsor, teaching and learning follows the design of the Ontario Curriculum. The curriculum provides an organized overview of the skills and knowledge required in the core academic subjects and describes the conceptual understanding that students will gain through these subjects. With the use of the Ontario Curriculum, there are also assessments that can be used to verify if students are mastering their subjects. These assessments occur during grades 3, 6, 9 and 10. The assessments are aligned with the curriculum and show if student are proficient in the core academic areas of mathematics and literacy.

We currently cover the following Windsor-area school districts: Greater Essex County District School Board and Windsor Essex Catholic District School Board.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Windsor District Curriculum

Once in high school, the foundational courses introduce students to key topics in earth and space science, biology, chemistry and physics which prepare them for advanced science opportunities. Students continue with these topics and also learn more about environmental science in grades 11-12. They study genetic processes of humans, animals, and plants, cellular and molecular biology, metabolic processes, biomedicine, and population dynamics in biology.

In chemistry, they learn about chemical bonding reactions, gases and atmospheric chemistry, the structure and properties of matter, and electrochemistry. In earth and space science, students study geological processes and planetary science. The environmental science strand focuses on solutions for contemporary problems and sustainable ecosystems. In physics, they learn about energy transformations, gravitational, electric, and magnetic fields, and kinematics.

Chalk Talk: Helping with Difficult Reading Assignments

When students enter high school, the reading material may be more difficult for them to face. There are ways for parents to help them tackle the reading. First of all, help them decide the best method of reading it. First, determine the length of the book and when the book must be finished. This will allow them to see how many pages, roughly, should be covered per night. If the teen has too much difficulty, see if there is an audio recording of the book. This way the teen can read and listen at the same time. Study guides can also help a teen to work their way through. Finally, if the teen doesn’t mind, the parent can read the book at the same time. The parents and teen can then discuss the book together.
