Central Huron District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

Central Huron’s school use a curriculum model that combines clear objectives for content knowledge learning with the path to understanding essential concepts and principles in each subject. Additionally, the curriculum designs a path by which higher-order, critical thinking skills are attained through the different types of subjects students are introduced to during their school years. Core academic subjects like Math, Science, History, and English all have essential learning strategies, broad literacy and communication requirements, and offer students different ways of understanding the world.

We currently cover the following Central Huron-area school districts: Avon Maitland District School Board and Huron-Superior Catholic District School Board.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Central Huron District Curriculum

Math and Science show students the way to solve problems, develop innovations, and discern the validity of ideas. One topic that many students use in a range of practical ways is the study of statistics and probability. Students get an introduction to statistics and probability that allows them to make inferences about a population. They use knowledge of probability models to predict the characteristics of a group, and compare groups through the process of random sampling.

The English curriculum focus on cross-curricular reading and writing, verbal and listening skills, and media studies. These learning areas support the breadth of the curriculum and develop analytic, evaluative, and creative thinking for students. Students learn about writing, and processes for pre-writing, revising, and editing, so that they are able to write proficiently on any formal task. By preparing students for academic achievement through their core subjects, students are able to take on the interest-oriented and innovative programs available.

Chalk Talk: The Personal Statement

The personal statement on a college application is the student’s time to tell the admissions department something that is not apparent from the application. It allows them to understand the personality, values and passions of the student. It allows them to understand who the student is and what they care about. This part of the application process has nothing to do with test scores or grades, instead it is the time for the student to stand out from others and share why they belong in the college. The student needs to take the time to plan what they want to say and use the statement as a way to paint a picture of who the student is.
