In Mathematics, Common Core Standards focuses on a core number of math subjects including computational skills such as arithmetic, statistics, algebra, geometry and proportional reasoning. The importance of why and where is stressed in terms of understanding math and math rules and procedures in this curriculum. Students are expected to understand why certain mathematical procedures work to solve problems in addition to memorizing math tools. The goal is for students to be math literate by the time they graduate from high school with the ability to apply what they have learned in the workforce and in higher education.
In English and Language Arts, students focus on learning to read, write, listen, and speak with reading and writing assignments that are progressively more complex year by year. Skills such as reading for evidence and the development of critical analysis skills and an advanced vocabulary are stressed in reading and writing assignments.
