Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Aberdeen District Curriculum

The Reading curriculum at Aberdeen follows the state standards and the Common Core State Standards. In addition they encourage parents to expand the students reading skill by presenting them with websites that list books for the children to read at home. Included in this list are specialized areas such as non-fiction, myths and fables and Shakespeare for Kids. When these children enter high school, with this additional material, they are ready to face more advanced reading.

The Aberdeen Schools help meet the needs that children have with mathematics by using Pearson Success to guide the students. With this material, teachers are able to lead student through the basics of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. This prepares the students for subjects, such as algebra, geometry or calculus, which they may face in high school or beyond. The use of these materials is backed up by on-line activities to help children hone their math skills.

Chalk Talk: Helping a Middle-Schooler Think About College

It is easy to get in the mind-set in middle school that college is a long way away, so why think about it now. This is the perfect time to think about it, though. It is not too early to begin talking with the school counselor about the choices and what steps they believe should be taken. It is also time to make sure that the student understands the importance of good grades, so they should develop good study habits and commit to giving their best effort. Last, this is the time to make sure that communication is good between the parent and student. Try to take time away from everyday things and enjoy activities together. Even a walk will open up the communication pathway and remind both parties how important this parent-child relationship is, not only now, but also into the future.
