Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Aberdeen District Curriculum

The Aberdeen schools utilize the South Dakota Test of Educational Progress, known as STEP, as their foremost system of assessment. This is used to measure the progress and achievement for each student, and is an indicator for Adequate Yearly Progress in compliance with the No Child Left Behind Act. The core curriculum taught by this school system is Mathematics, Language Arts, Science, and History.

In the early school years, the students begin to learn about history. They learn about cause and effect relationships and how they relate to chronology, such as one’s life events, Americans that have had an impact on our country, such as George Washington, local and national celebrations, and using maps and globes. Patriotic symbols and their meanings and our nation’s Constitution are also included in the teaching of elementary history. When teaching history, reading is also intertwined with this, as the students do a great amount of non-fiction reading and writing about historical concepts.

Chalk Talk: The Importance of the Kindergarten Teacher

The Kindergarten teacher is the child’s first teacher within the school system. There are countless roles for this employee! One role this teacher plays is to provide structure in the classroom and get the students acclimated to simply being in school and developing those work habits. The Kindergarten teacher has standards of learning to follow, and although basic to us, to the Kindergartener they are very complex. This teacher must differentiate instruction, have a healthy balance of work time and free play time, and be very structured. Another very important thing that the Kindergarten teacher must do is show each student that she cares for him or her and their learning progress!
