Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Acworth District Curriculum

Mathematics learning in grades K-5 focuses on foundational skills, extending computation, measurement and spatial recognition to problem solving, reasoning, representation, communication and making connections to the real-world. English Language Arts focuses on the skills of reading, speaking, listening and use of language, critical thinking and ability to do more complex reading and writing.

Middle school and high school grades extend English Language Arts learning to emphasize understanding and analysis of texts and identification of story elements in progressively complex literature. Student writing will be the development and demonstration of argumentative, informational and explanatory skills. The use of complex language and discussion are also emphasized in these grades. Mathematics learning at for 6-12 grade students focus on building problem solving and reasoning skills, application of algebra, analytics, and mathematical decision making.

Chalk Talk: Helping Your Struggling Student

As students progress to more advanced learning and application of learning, their knowledge of concepts and usage is called upon more often. Students are expected to know and be able to do certain skills at every grade level; as students move to the next grade, these skills require students to be prepared. When students struggle with a certain subject area or in applying specific skills, help is needed. Not only at that moment, but for future learning. Teachers are called upon to meet students’ academic needs, with additional assistance to those who may be struggling. Parents can play a role as well to further assist that classroom support. Resources available to teachers are also available to parents and students. Websites specific to education, subject area associations, textbooks as well as educational centers in every town are all available to assist the struggling student. Take a look at what resource or resources can help your struggling student. Assisting your child with skills and knowledge when they need it can benefit them long after that moment.
