Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Aiken District Curriculum
Aiken County Public School District seek to build a better tomorrow by reaching one student at a time. They use the Common Core State Standards to reach each student in Math and Language Arts. In English Language Arts, students learn to generate meaning from both literature and non-fiction. They are able to read and write across the content areas including not only literary works, but also Science and Social Studies preparing them for life in the real world.
In Math, students are expected to learn concepts to a greater depth than in the past. They spend more time on fewer concepts in a school year so that they master the ideas and only briefly revisit them in the future. Students are introduced to numeracy, patterning, shape properties, and probabilities to prepare them for their later studies in algebra, geometry, or statistics at an advanced level. From this, they derive their ability to perform quantitative reasoning in real life problems.

Chalk Talk: Bridging through the Summer
Students work hard for ten months to achieve academic success and are well deserving of the long summer break. However, it is vital that all academia is not simply forgotten over the summer months. It can also mean that excess time is spent in the beginning of the next year reviewing skills and knowledge learned in the past year. Spending 30-60 minutes a day reading or playing academic type games can make a huge difference in how your child begins the next school year. Simple daily brain exercises will give your child a jumpstart over his or her classmates when school begins in the fall. The summer is the time for enriching and extending your child's learning, and it should be kept fun!
