The Ontario Curriculum provides a framework for the instructional process used in the schools in Ajax. This curriculum is designed to cover the core academic subjects and electives. Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Ajax District Curriculum
The curriculum for Language gives an overview of the types of literacy, communication, and thinking skills students will develop from elementary to high school. The early grades provide students with time to read for pleasure and also focus on basic phonemic and grammatical topics. These build the skills students need for literary analysis and to evaluate non-fiction and informational texts. Students write literary responses and structured papers which are expected to show awareness of language conventions, the ability to develop a topic, and an awareness of purpose and audience.
Math, Science, and Technology are areas in which there are a number more course offerings than in the past. Technology has increased the possibilities for instruction and classes taught, and students are able to take a full complement of courses to develop technological ability that would prepare them for a successful career. Productivity tools are introduced as well, so kids learn how to harness the power of technology to conduct research, complete assignments, and collaborate with other learners.

Keeping Informed: Recent Ajax Educational News
- Technology Department - The Technology Department at Pickering High School offers classes in topics like animation, communication, construction, design, and development all of which help students bring out a range of abilities. These classes provide many opportunities for creative project-based work and students develop relevant career skills.
- Youth Exchange - The Youth Exchange Program is available to 20 Ajax HS students each year who are interested in participating in a leadership development program in which students from Ajax and students from Driftpile First Nation in Alberta travel to visit each other and take part in a range of cultural exchange and learning activities.
- EcoSchools - The students in the Durham Catholic School District have the opportunity to experience a curriculum in environmental science through the EcoSchools Program. This initiative is preparing teachers to teach students to be aware of conservation and greening measures and to develop ecological literacy skills.

Chalk Talk: Building a Good Study Environment
Creating a space that a child is able to study and complete homework is important to helping them succeed at school. The area should be away from things that may distract the child. This should have good lighting, supplies that will be needed and a computer, along with a table or desk. To help the child’s subconscious realize the child’s potential place some well-placed, colorful, positive affirmation phrases placed around the area. A calendar is also useful so the child can keep an eye on potential due dates and the progress they have made. These few items will help the child realize that when they enter this area, serious work is going to be completed.
