Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Alamosa District Curriculum

Children in Alamosa take part in a curriculum that has been devised according to the guidelines of the Colorado Academic Standards. As part of the state’s plan to prepare students for life and work in a global society, students undertake study of a second language. Children learn to speak, listen, read, and write – learning skills that advance in difficulty as they progress through the grade levels.

The social studies curriculum is about much more than local, state, national, and world history. The curriculum incorporates the study of economics, civics, governance, and geography as well. Technology has been integrated into the standards to help children identify the benefits of using technology for purposes of research, storytelling, and understanding past and current events. Social studies teachers also integrate lessons in personal financial literacy in order to prepare students to understand the financial obligations that await them upon graduation.

Chalk Talk: Benefits of Parental Involvement

Creating a home environment that promotes learning is a primary means by which parents can help their children be more successful in school. Showing interest and participating in school events means so much to young students. In fact, according to research, the single most important indicator of a student’s academic success is the level of involvement their parents have in their education. This means parents can greatly benefit their child by having high expectations, encouraging their children to read and explore other academic pursuits, helping their child with homework and school projects, and being involved in their child’s academic and extracurricular activities at school. By working with their child’s teachers and providing support when necessary, parents can greatly improve their child’s behavior, academic achievement, and overall desire to learn.
