Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Albert Lea District Curriculum
Albert Lea’s elementary English language arts curriculum helps students develop the skills they need to excel in writing. The process of writing is a particular point of emphasis. Students acquire the ability to produce clear, coherent writings that are focused on an appropriate audience. The brainstorming process is discussed, with students identifying ways they can generate ideas for their writings. Students likewise engage in the outlining, drafting, writing, and revision processes in order to get a better understanding of the steps required to create the best written work.
The earth-space science strand of the high school science curriculum begins with students examining the various sources of energy available on earth. Renewable energies, such as solar and wind are explored, as are non-renewable energy sources, like natural gas and oil. Global climatic patterns are examined as well. Learners explain how the rotation of the earth, the presence or absence of mountains, ocean currents, and the like work together to influence climate patterns around the world. The cyclical movement of carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen is also traced and students identify their impact on the biosphere, lithosphere, and hydrosphere.

Chalk Talk: Benefits of Physical Education
Physical Education class is, for many students, the only time they spend in physical activity during the day. As a result, P.E. takes on even greater importance in the lives of today’s students. Regular physical activity promotes strength and endurance, as well as the development of strong muscles and bones. With obesity a significant problem in the U.S., P.E. courses also represent an excellent vehicle by which students can burn calories and learn how to eat better. Students that take physical education classes also benefit socially and emotionally. Students can develop strong bonds with their peers in the context of play, while also developing more enhanced cooperative and communication skills. Likewise, physical activity is a great stress-buster and helps students deal with daily stressors in a healthy manner.
