Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Albertville District Curriculum

Albertville focuses on the early academic development and the fostering of thinking skills at an early age, as they have the pre-Kindergarten program and a school just specifically for Kindergarteners. Research shows that engrossing children in reading, writing, and early work habits can help the child become more successful in school at an earlier age.

Albertville High School houses a contemporary Fine Arts Center, and this addition is shared by the schools of the district. Plays, concerts, and
performances are attended and enjoyed by the students and community members throughout the year. There is a schedule for all to view within the
school and the community, and the students are allowed to attend the performances. Tickets can be purchased by members of the school community on the school’s website.

Chalk Talk: The Importance of Preparing for Kindergarten

Times have changed, and Kindergarten is not like it was when you were younger. When children go to school for the first time, they are expected to know the basics so they can be apt to learning much easier. Children nowadays are expected to know their alphabet; both letters and sound relations (phonemic awareness), how to write their full name, their numbers, shapes, and colors. They should demonstrate that they know the parts of a book and the familiarity of reading books.

Parents can easily prepare their children for Kindergarten by reading to their children daily, and incorporating sounds, letters, numbers, and writing into their daily routine. Coloring and using their hands for fine motor skills (such as playing with Legos or Playdough) is also very important, as are gross motor skills (being able to balance on one foot, skip, hop, and jump). Practicing one or two step directions with children is also very helpful.
