Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Alexander City District Curriculum

In Language Arts, reading is a key factor. Reading is taught in many ways in order to meet the needs of all learners. Reading to write enhances the students' writing skills, and aids in phonemic awareness, sound to symbol relationships, and one-to-one correspondence within their reading. Students are engrossed in print in the early years, and as they progress through the grade levels, they are taught a multitude of reading strategies to make them efficient readers in all subject areas.

Keeping Informed: Recent Alexander City Educational News

  • Alexander Schools Education Foundation - The Alexander Schools Education Foundation has been devoting its efforts into acquiring and applying various means of technology into Alexander City Schools. Alexander City Schools has proven to be one of the top schools in Alabama to utilize technology in their classrooms and media center, and this foundation wants to give them more up-to-date technological advances so the school system can keep up with the ever changing pace of technology. Areas of updating will be: computer labs, media centers, laptops for the students, iPODs, and iPADs, and Smartboards.
  • Immunization Requirements - All students entering the 6th grade will need a booster of the Tdap vaccine. It is an immunization requirement for all students, and must be given and documented before they may enter school. To be sure the children receive the vaccine; local health clinics are available to serve the students in the summer before school begins.
  • Recent Awards for Alexander City Schools - Alexander City Schools is the first city district in Alabama, the first in the nation, to achieve accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. This is a major accomplishment, as city wide, all schools have been accredited. In addition, this school system was honored with the award of the National Civic Star. This achievement gave recognition to the fact that all high school graduates can receive two years of free college education by attending Central Alabama Community College which offers a wide variety of two year degrees.

Chalk Talk: Attending a Community College

Many students opt to attend a Community College for the first two years following graduation. Community College is an option for those who want to live at home and commute to school, while saving money on tuition. Living at home means there are no room and board fees as well. Some students choose to get the general studies out of the way, as they can get the same quality of education for a much more reasonable price. They then transfer those credits to a University to specialize in their major. It is a superb and quality way to begin the college educational experience.
