Alfred and Plantagenet District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

Students receive a rigorous core education based on clearly explained standards and expectations within the local schools. The process for subject-area learning is detailed in frameworks which describe the progression of learning that students will take in each subject. The expectations are the skills, procedures, knowledge, and core competencies which students will gain in their subjects. These goals are accomplished by working closely with parents and community stakeholders to devise meaningful and relevant learning experiences for children at all grade levels.

We currently cover the following Alfred and Plantagenet-area school district: Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario, Upper Canada District School Board.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Alfred and Plantagenet District Curriculum

The core subjects begin in elementary school by developing foundational abilities in literacy, numeracy, science, and historical understanding. In high school, these subjects are developed more in-depth and when students take English, Math, or Science, they will have the option of taking an Applied Version or an Academic Version. The Applied Version focuses on the practical applications of the skills developed in these courses; the Academic Version emphasizes the theoretical and abstract principles within the subjects.

At the secondary level there are also a number of program options to choose from. The Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program offers students a hands-on learning experience in which they fulfill their academic requirements while gaining work experience in a skilled trade. The International Baccalaureate Program is a rigorous college preparatory program that takes an integrated approach to subject learning and expects students to become strong independent learners. All students in the district are also expected to fulfill a Community Involvement requirement that requires them to connect to and collaborate with others in the community.

Chalk Talk: What Is Scaffolding?

Scaffolding is an instructional method used to build skill upon skill until a student is able to accomplish a complete task or perform an entire set of steps unaided. Scaffolding uses modeling, a common technique, which is when a teacher exemplifies some thinking skill or set of procedures for a student. Parents can use this approach at home when they help their child learn something, like carpentry or cooking, that requires them to go through a number of steps. They may need assistance with some more than others, and so you scaffold accordingly. Essentially, by showing students what to do, step-by-step, a scaffold of ability is built and students are soon able to perform all such procedures or steps independently.
