Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Allendale District Curriculum

The majority of instructional time will be spent on Language Arts and Mathematics. Students will obtain the skills necessary to read a variety of literature across different genres with fluency and comprehension. Teachers will spend time daily modeling these skills and helping students practice them on their own. In Mathematics, students will work to understand basic number theory and compute the four main numerical operations. Great time will be spent making sure that each student is able to add, subtract, multiply and divide.

As students enter middle school, they will add chosen electives to these four core subjects. Middle school is a transition period for students where they go from a highly structured environment to one where they begin to take ownership of their education. Students will choose electives based on career or personal interests. The courses offered in middle school are extensions of the four core subjects and advance into more complex problem-solving methods.

Chalk Talk: How to Choose a Tutor

When parents make the decision to pursue tutoring services for their student, it is important that they choose the right person for the job. One of the first things parents should look at are the prospective tutor’s credentials. You do not want to hire someone to help your student in Calculus if their background is in the subject of Writing. A second aspect parents should look for are references. You want to find someone who has not only the experience, but who has achieved positive results with other students. Another important component is to make sure the tutor’s personality will work with that of your student. Some students perform better with authoritative personalities, while others respond to compassionate types. Finally, parents should look for a tutor that has good communication skills. You want to make sure that the tutor can relay both positive and negative feedback to you and your student so that you know exactly how he or she is performing.
