Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Allentown District Curriculum

Each grade builds upon the one previous to it, so that the English/Language Arts program focuses upon skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening across all grades. Students who use phonics to decode simple stories in the early grades will read literature and analyze how writers use characterization, action, and setting to create mood and plot in later grades. All subject area curricula is designed to scaffold learning in this manner.

The Allentown School District Math curriculum goes from simple counting and measurement in Kindergarten to complex concepts in algebra and geometry in high school. Students learn how to apply mathematical and scientific ideas to real-world problems, such as ecology and the environment. For example, the study of natural resources can lead to specific ways students can protect them. These connections help foster the holistic learning that is a goal of the curriculum.
