Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Alliance District Curriculum

In the K-12 core curriculum, the Mathematics courses contain material in algebra, such as solving algebraic equations, analyzing, representing, and using the problems to make generalizations. Students are also instructed to use words, graphs, and tables to describe and implement algebraic expressions, and to use variables to relate them to a situation within the equations. The skill building steps that students take in elementary and middle school is meant to prepare them for a more focused, analytic approach in high school.

In the K-12 Reading syllabus, the standards include the development and implementation of writing for a variety of purposes. The teachers teach the students about all aspects of the writing process, from brainstorming to the final publishing state. Choosing topics and the purpose for writing (to persuade, inform, or to entertain) is required in the writing objectives. Writing using correct grammar, punctuation, spelling, and sentence structure is also developed throughout grades K-12.

Chalk Talk: What Is the FFA?

The FFA was formerly known as the Future Farmers of America, and still is. However, in today’s global scientific economy, the FFA stands for more than farmers. In many high schools across America, the FFA helps students who envision a career in agriculture, such as one day becoming chemists, biologists, veterinarians, and engineers. Today’s FFA instructs children and instills the values of planting, harvesting, and in addition to this, recognizing that agriculture is also a business, an art, and a science.
