Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Altamonte Springs District Curriculum

The Language Arts curriculum is grounded in phonics, word analysis, fluency, vocabulary development, reading comprehension, literary analysis, writing, and grammar. In middle school, students construct meaning from texts, analyze digital media, employ the writing process, listen to speakers, develop strategies by which to expand their vocabulary, and research information. High school students master how to evaluate rhetorical strategies, represent literary genres, and express ideas through writing.

Elementary Math students are expected to understand basic operations, fractions, decimals, shapes, volume, and surface area. The middle school math curriculum covers integers, rational numbers, equations, inequalities, linear relationships, data, probability, 2D geometry, and 3D geometry. In high school, students may take algebra, geometry, and analysis of functions.

Chalk Talk: How to Find Free Educational Activities

There are plenty of free educational activities, but you have to know where to look for them. First, visit your city or county website to look for announcements. Look through your local newspaper to see what is happening in your area. Look for community bulletin boards at the library or the grocery store. Contact local museums, zoos, nature centers, and recreational facilities to find out what programs they offer. Once you find a fun activity, do not hesitate to let your friends know. Word-of- mouth is still the best advertising.
