Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Alton District Curriculum
The English curriculum helps students develop skills in speaking, writing, reading and listening. Each of these are taught together. The students learn to not only read words, but to find information while reading. They then learn how to use this information to create reports that they then orally present to the class as they listen to the speaker. To develop active listening and effective speaking skills, students work in small groups to present information in a clear, concise manner and provide feedback to speakers about their ability to convey valuable information to listeners.
The social studies curriculum at Mission Consolidated Independent School District explores various cultures around the world. This begins by studying the local history, including why and when people settled here. This continues as the study their state and the country. Students discover the importance trade and exploration made on settling an area. They also find that around the world there are similar reasons for people to create homes and communities in specific areas.

Chalk Talk: Careers for Students Interested in Environmental Science
Young adults learn about environmental conservation when they attend classes in Environmental Science, but they may not be sure how to use this information after graduation. One of the fields that may be of interest is in energy efficiency and water conservation that people can use in their own homes by learning how to maintain and upgrade their homes. By taking the information that is learned in classes and educating homeowners these young adults can help to reduce the carbon footprint of others. Green collar jobs are also a growing field, and students should be encouraged to learn more about the different types of opportunities available in sustainable energy development. Students can also help governments develop methods to reduce greenhouse gas and increase sustainability programs.
