Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Altoona District Curriculum

Altoona’s elementary math learners begin their exploration of math principles in kindergarten. Students work on correctly identifying numbers, both in name and in proper sequence. A comparison of numbers is undertaken as well, such that students are able to identify numbers that are bigger or smaller. Children are also introduced to basic numerical operations, including addition and subtraction. In order to develop a basis for place value, kindergarten math students work with numbers between 11-19 as well.

The high school business and technology curriculum in Altoona focuses in part on the accounting aspects of business ownership. Students discuss the various types of business ownership and review the equity accounts that can be used for each. Learners also become familiar with financial reports for businesses, and prepare sample reports for sole proprietorships and corporations. Debt and equity financing are compared, and students identify the ways in which each impact financial statements.

Chalk Talk: SAT Subject Test Tips

There are a variety of ways your child can improve his or her performance on the SAT subject test. If the test is in a subject in which knowledge is lost without practice, such as a foreign language, it is advisable that your child take the exam soon after the class has ended. This way, the content and skills are still fresh in their mind. It is also prudent for your child to familiarize him or herself with the way in which the test is structured. Online practice tests are available such that your child can get comfortable with the wording of instructions and the questions. Students should also be advised to read instructions and questions very thoroughly. Many test-takers make silly mistakes by not reading everything thoroughly.
