Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Altus District Curriculum

The spiraling curriculum of English Language Arts has standards of learning such as improving listening skills. Effective listening in order to be successful in many aspects of life is a learned behavior. Teachers must teach the students how to listen to get the highest benefits from what is being said to them. The Language Arts teacher is responsible for planning exercises and practice activities for listening skills and evaluating the students’ listening skills.

The Math program has learning concepts which include the higher math concepts of pre-calculus, trigonometry, and honors mathematics, such as geometry and algebra II. Students that perform well in the middle school grades usually enroll in upper-level courses in the area of mathematics. Concepts taught in trigonometry include: trigonometric functions, various formulas (such as sines, cosines, and tangents), and angle transformations. In calculus, differential and integral areas of the subject are instructed, which include the many aspects of change.

Chalk Talk: The Role of Advanced Placement Teachers

Advanced Placement Teachers have great responsibility in educating the students on a higher level than other typical classes. The students must be challenged to perform upper-level thinking tasks, such as analyzing and synthesizing information, and the work load of the AP courses is much greater than the other courses. When the students go to college, they should be better prepared for some of the workload because of taking the AP courses, thanks to the AP Course Instructor!
