Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Amarillo District Curriculum
The Reading curriculum in Amarillo begins by teaching students how to read stories. This is done using a variety of sources, from books to eBooks and more. Beginning in early elementary, students see how reading can assist them in other subject areas as well. In fifth grade, students build on these reading skills even more as they begin to identify authors, characters, setting and theme in a non-fiction book. About this time students also learn how to visualize the text they are reading into pictures in their minds.
Mathematics also plays a part in various subjects of study. Amarillo Schools start by showing students that objects can use numbers to represent them when they are counting. They also learn about place values of numbers so they can read, write, compare and order numbers. - Peers Assisted Leadership - The Peers Assisted Leadership program is designed to help younger students become acquainted with, and comfortable with, the new world of high school. An older mentoring student orients students to their surroundings, while they answer any questions and form a bond that will see the new student through puzzling times. This pairing of students can go beyond the first year in the school, to become an interpersonal relationship that can prove beneficial to both students.
- International Forum - The International Forum is a place where students learn more about various cultures. The meeting consist of time for communication and sharing between the students, plus opportunities to meet with people from different parts of the world. This group helps students see how each person is connected to others.
- Junior Statesmen of America - Students in the Junior Statesmen of America share ideas or concerns about different topics. These students learn how to debate with others in a formal setting, which enables them to expand their leadership skills.

In fifth grade, the science curriculum tends to become more serious. Up until this time students my have carried on experiments without worrying very much about the outcome. In fifth grade, students begin to measure, count, predict and record steps of an experiment. They also are able to give a sensible hypothesis and are able to defend their conclusions with evidence. Along with these scientific milestones, they learn to identify and explain structure and they are learn details about the solar system. Even though, a student may not go on to a career in science, the attention to detail will assist them in most areas of their lives.
