American Fork District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

The curriculum in the Alpine School District is based on the nationwide Common Core State Standards, an evidence-based common curriculum designed to prepare students for success in college and careers. The goal of the program is to make students career and college ready by high school graduation, through rigorous standards in Math and Language Arts that develop sequentially through the educational experience.

We currently cover the following American Fork-area school district: Alpine School District.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the American Fork District Curriculum

In Language Arts, students are introduced to a variety of informational and literary texts beginning in kindergarten, are guided to gradually increase the difficulty of the texts they read, and are asked to become critical readers of those texts. They are also asked to analyze and explain their analysis of the texts, so that they will have greater comprehension and ability to process information.

At the elementary level, the development of core skills are taught and reinforced. Students use leveled readers throughout, and are encouraged to use supplemental programs to reinforce skills at home and build competencies. Similarly, in mathematics they work from basic arithmetic through the introduction of the concepts underpinning algebraic, geometric, and statistical reasoning. The high school requires that students take two years of a core science, such as earth science, biology, chemistry, or physics. They must also take one year of an applied science, such as zoology, botany, or astronomy.

Chalk Talk: Extracurricular Science Clubs

Science-based extracurricular activities, like Science Olympiad or Physics Club, are increasingly popular in the schools. In fact, they are some of the most fun you can have in a school program. Science extracurriculars are generally organized around hands-on tasks that enrich your experience of science, and give you a real feel for what a science or technology career might be like. They are great resume-builders for college, and also usually a fun place to hang out and, often, get to engineer controlled explosions, collapsing bridges, and other exciting events.
